Sabah gazetesinin 18 Mayıs Cuma tarihli baskısında yer alan haberde, bir süredir Avusturya ve Fransa'da teknik direktör arayışında olan Demirören'in Arjantinli teknik adam Passarella ile görüştüğü ve teklifte bulunduğu belirtildi. 54 yaşındaki Daniel Alberto Passarella, oyunculuğu döneminde Arjantin futbolunun bayrak isimlerinden biri oldu. 1978'de Dünya Kupası'nı kazanan Arjantin Milli Takımı'na 25 yaşında kaptanlık yapan Passarella'nın lakabı, 'Büyük Kaptan'dı.

River Plate'te 298 maçta 99 gol atan Passarella 1989'da futbolu bıraktığı River'da ilk teknik adamlık deneyimini yaşadı. 1998'de Arjantin Milli Takımı'nı Dünya Kupası'nda çeyrek finale çıkaran Passarella, Uruguay Milli Takımı, Parma, Monterrey ve Corinthians'tan sonra yeniden başına geçtiği River Plate'le 3 şampiyonluk yaşadı.
